Tim Smith is a graduate of the Mason Gross School of the Arts
where he focused on percussion and music education.
As faculty in the Rutgers University Music Department, he serves
as associate conductor for the Symphony Band and Concert Band.
He also Director of
Athletic Bands and the famed Rutgers
Pep Band.
He is an active member of the College Band Directors National Association,
and adjudicates several marching and concert band competitions annually.
In addition to these duties, he coordinates the outreach efforts for the
Athletic Bands and the Music Department.
His work in the Music Department, and his travel with the Rutgers
Bands, takes him all over the United States for conducting clinics and band seminars.
Every summer Tim studies conducting technique with one of
the leaders in the field in an effort to grow as a conductor.
Tim's teaching and conducting philosophy is largely performance- based, with
emphasis on the end result of study.
He says "Of course in an ensemble setting this
is quite obvious, but in a classroom setting this end result may
not be as apparent except to the student and the teacher. That is why
teaching is such a rewarding profession-- the student- teacher relationships
that develop."
Tim is also an endurance athlete, running in marathons and triathlons.
Why? "It fits in perfectly with my performance-based teaching philosophy;
I do it for the feeling of doing my best to cross the finish line."
