Rutgers Music Admission Guidelines

Undergraduate Bachelor of Music

All applicants must:

  1. Submit a formal Undergraduate Admission Application to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and-
  2. Submit an Audition Questionnaire to the Music Department to arrange an audition in one of the vocal or instrumental performance areas.

Graduate Program in Performance

  1. A Graduate Application should be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office. Deadlines: May 1 for September admission, December 1 for January admission.
  2. Each applicant is required to submit an Audition Questionnaire to the Music Department to perform an audition recital.

Repertory for admission to the Master of Music program is understood to be the equivalent to a Bachelor of Music recital. Please note, it is up to the applicant to supply an accompanist if one is needed.

For both the Doctor of Musical Arts degree and the Artist Diploma, applicants must also submit evidence of having completed a Master of Music degree or the equivalent. A TOEFL is required for international candidates. In addition, applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts program must submit a sample of their analytical or historical writing. On the day of the audition, applicants are also given diagnostic examinations in music theory and history.
