Paul Cohen  strives to bring the saxophone into the mainstream of classical music performance.

Paul Cohen is active as a performer, teacher, historian, musicologist and author. He has appeared and recorded with many of the nation's top symphonies and professional ensembles.

Dr. Cohen has published numerous articles on saxophone literature and history in such noted publications as the Saxophone Journal, Clarinet and Saxophone Society Magazine of Great Britain, The Grainger Society Journal, Saxophone Symposium, Instrumentalist, and CBDNA Notes.

Since 1985 he has authored the widely read and informative "Vintage Saxophone Revisited" column in Saxophone Journal.

Dr. Cohen's publishing company, To the Fore Publishers, offers original, historical and contemporary saxophone works from a wide range of nationally known composers, keeping the legacy and traditions of the concert saxophone alive.

His collection of vintage saxophones includes nearly every variation ever made.

He has recorded for Hyperion, Arizona Press, and the "Nine Stellar Pieces" CD. Recent concerts include performances with NJ Pops, Garden State Arts Wind Ensemble, Goldman Band, Massachusetts Symphony, Edison Arts Orchestra, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, New York Virtuosi, Wayne Chamber Orchestra, New Hudson Saxophone Quartet, Long Island Philharmonic, Plainfield Symphony, International WASBE conference, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Doug Riecken and Midnight, and Composer's Concordance.

Featured soloist with the Edison Arts Orchestra in Pautze's Symphonetta

Soloist with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra (Merkin Hall, NYC) in Alec Wilder's Suite #1, Three Ballades for Stan.

Recorded Wilder's Suite #1, Three Ballades for Stan for the Hyperion Label

Soloist with the New York Virtuosi in NYC. The work, Loeffler's "Divertissement Espagnol" for alto saxophone and orchestra was the first performance in 98 years, and is one of the many historical works re-discovered by Cohen.

Recorded "Three Fantasies" for saxophone quartet for the Arizona Press label. (release Spring 2001)

Release of his solo saxophone recording of music by Robert Martin in the CD "9 Stellar Pieces". Also on the CD were solo recordings by Ray Mase, Stephen Forman, Michael Powell, William Purvis, and others.

Appeared with Wayne Chamber orchestra in Rhapsody in Blue.

Winter 2001

Appeared with Edison Arts Orchestra in Bolero (sopranino and soprano) and American in Paris (alto).

Recital with the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet on the Great Recital Series at CW Post College, Long Island. Works include music of Torke, Copland, Wilder.

Appeared with the Long Island Philarharmonic in the world premiere of the orchestral version of Lord of the Rings (soprano and alto).

Recital with the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet at Queens College. Works included music of Brings, Steve Cohen, Wilder.

Soloist with the Plainfield Symphony in Pautze's Concerto for Saxophone. This work, written for Dr. Cohen, has the soloist play soprano, alto and tenor in different movements.

Spring 2001

Instrumental conductor and coach for staged version of Weill's Three Penny Opera, NYC.

Appeared with the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet playing the Quartet (written for the NHQ) of Elias Tanenbaum on a North-South Consonance program sponsored by the ACA in New York City.

Guest soloist and lecturer at the International WASBE conference at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. Peformed the original Concerto for Saxophone by Ingolf Dahl in its European premiere.

Principal saxophonist with the NJ Pops in series of Spring concerts.

CD release - The American Muse - A century of American music for saxophone quartet nationally released on Allegro . The New Hudson Saxophone Quartet performs music of Carter, Torke, Copland, Wilder, Hampton, Steve Cohen and Caryl Florio.

Appeared with the Charletson Symphony Orchestra (SC) in John Harbison's Remembering Gatsby (soprano)

Publication of liner notes for the American Brass Quintet for Dahl's Music for Brass Instruments

Conducted the US Premiere of Andriessen's Six Moods, Oberlin Ohio.
